Research for Music Video: CAROL VERNALLIS' IDEA ON EDITING AND CAMERAWORK.

Carol Vernallis studied the use of editing and camerawork in music videos. Editing and camera work is used much more often in music videos than in films. The editing has rhythmis basis closely connected to the song. In simple terms: 

• Edits can be really obvious to the audience to draw attention to themselves, edits such as wipes and added special effects. 1
• Jump Cuts. 2
• A master shot called a base track is frequently used to give structure to the video.
• The camera may move in time with the music. 3
• The usual rules of continuity editing are broken in order to draw attention to what it is the audience is watching.

'Us' - Regina Spektor

Straight away in Regina's video 'Us' we can notice that the video is very obviously edited which draws a great deal of attention (1) the edit used is the Jump Cut (2) the Jump Cut is very well used and works with the pace of the music (3) the Jump cut editing is spot on that it looks as if the video is just fast forward.

Below is one whole screenshot of 8 mini screen shots of the first 8 seconds of the video, (1fps). As you can see the images are very different each time, Regina is doing something different in each shot - one second she pushed the piano away and the next she is holding a rug. These are jump cuts as the camera shoots her holding the rug and the next shot of the rug on the floor already, there is no shot in between showing how the rug got from point A to point B.
