We ask permission everyday. In college we ask to go to the toilet and we ask if we could borrow something, it is polite and safe. Otherwise if we do not ask permission it could lead to bad consequences.
Asking permission in the music industry is used quite often especially if an artist wants to do a cover on another artist's song (unless they have been requested.) They use what is called a copyright clearance (this is also used outside the music industry, like in art and law ect.)
Copyright: The exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorise others to do the same.
As the girls and I are taking a song from a popular artist it is very important that we get our copyright cleared by her Record Label.
However I could not find Mercury Record's email address so I had to contact her manager instead which I got off her Facebook page.
Here is an email of my request for a copyright clearance to use Pixie's song which i sent to her manager, Beth Narducci.
