Reflecting back on the new skills I have learnt from the practise music video I made...

I am going to start by saying I thought that making a music video would be a lot easier than making a thriller film, how wrong was I. I dont think I took into the consideration the amount of time and energy music artists put in to making and developing a music video, until I had to experience it for myself at the end of my AS year.

On our first lesson back to media after our exams, we were shown a tutorial about lip synching the media technican Mickey led this tutorial about lip synching. To help us understand more about lip synching Mickey showed us a demo of what we would achieve at the end of this lesson if we followed his instructions. To help us with the process of lip synching we used the programme Final Cut pro. As I had been using final cut pro for a while at this time, I thought I had learned everything I needed to know about this programme, but how wrong was I there was still alot more you could learn about final cut pro. The first new technique we learnt when using final cut pro was a "marker." "Marker" is when you mark a part of the song you want to use at the start of your track. To insert a "marker" all you had to do was to press the letter m, so to help us practise inserting markers in songs. We were all given a test song, the test song was a rock and roll song. Another technique we learnt about was the use of "razor blades", razor blades were used to cut out certain aspects of your music video  that you didnt want to use . I would say that this skil was quite difficult to develop, but once I took the time to learn and practise using the markers and razor blades, I found it quite easy.

After Mickey had finished his tutorial on Lip synching we were then put into groups and given a song and told we would be making our own music videos. The nerves were beginning to kick in as what if we messed up and made complete fools out of ourselves. After getting over the panic stage the real work began, we had a lot to do and only a short amount of time to do it. We had roughly about 50 minutes to film a whole music video and with no budget we had to think FAST. The song my group had was Aretha Franklins -Respect. We decided the film our music video outside as we thought it would be different and we didnt want it to seem like we were copying the orginal video. So off we went to begin filming but as we began to film we realised we had a problem, as we were only given a small mp3 player we realised that Ethel-who was singing the song in the video wouldnt be able to hear the song, which would make it difficult to film the music video. In the end we tried our best and went a head and filmed with Ethel singing the song.

When it came to the editing process of our music video the one thing we had trouble with was making sure that the miming was in time with the actual song, this process was defientaletly the hardest out of the whole music video. Several times we thought yes we have finally got it right but once we would play it back we would realise that we still hadnt managed it yet. After working closely and careful we managed to get the miming in time with the actual song. Result. All in all I would say for a first attempt at making a music video I think I did a pretty good job, even though we did face a few problems we managed to sort them out and still make a good first attempt music video.
