Research for Music Video: ANALYSIS OF MY FAVOURITE STUDENT MUSIC VIDEO.

As soon as i heard Coldplay i thought it would be a tricky one to pull off. But i must say this group did an excellent job in terms of the concept, camera work, lighting, editing and performance. EVERYTHING!

Having only watched over it once, it is already clear to me what the music video is about.
An ominous presence turning around the lives of those in need of help. (The guy who gets evicted from his home and a girl who ends up pregnant)
In the end the come across fate and meet each other. "It must be love, love, love (8)"

Mise en Scene:
Setting:
The setting is very well thought out, taking place in a numerous amount of locations. The settings are kept realistic and relevant to the song. (The guy and the girl presented in their homes, showing they're ordinary, normal people)
Near the end, the locations hit around central london, the heart of the city! Symbolic in a way of unity (when the guy and girl meets) Nicely set on London bridge...again symbolic in a way of building a bridge over your problems that 'flow beneath you.'

Props:
Went into a lot of detail with the eviction notice on the guys door, brief case, pregnancy test, hair straighteners!

Clothes:
To me it seemed like the outfits were planned out, with moodboards and group discussions. Each one had an out fit to match their current state. The male actor wore a suit and held a brief case to show he was on his way home from work/ or perhaps even uni. When he suddenly changes, his clothes become brighter and happier, his vest jumper represents wealth (his outfit was the type you wear to play golf, and since golf is a wealthy sport.. theres nothing else more to say about it!)
The female actress looked young in her clothing, like a college student. Also her clothes are very ordinary, this doesnt show much effort into her out fits however could be purposely done. (Would be nice if she wore a uniform to show she is only in high school and very young - this would of made her problem more serious as she'd be a 'teen mum' '16 and pregnant' sort of thing)
Keith's outfit didn't look too planned out, his clothing in the beginning looked too ordinary for a ghost like presence. It's only near the end where he started wearing white and a silver metallic trench coat which suits him more as an artist.

Lighting:
Used appropriate lighting especially in the night shots

Body Language:
They all did amazingly well with there performance and presenting themselves appropriately as their character. Keith did a good job of lip singing and using hand gestures as well as facial expressions (raising his eyebrows)
The male actor used great facial expression to show his sadness as well as his transformation to being happy.
The same goes to the female actress, her tears look believable!

Editing:
The black and white was used nicely, the colourlessness represents sadness. The sudden change to colour represents the significance of Keith's presence as a ominous ghost. Also the change of emotion to relief and happiness.
Great use of fast forward (ellipsis) to show the lovely flow of light from the traffic.
Also the fast forwarding/ellipsis of the surrounding (but Keith is still moving in the same pace) this nicely represents his pace of life, whilst others rush around him, he shows how chilled and relaxed he is.
At 2:34 seconds, there is a lovely use of mini window clips to show many shots at once. Like an overview of what has happened so far in the music video.
Slow motion at the end where the actor and actress stop face to face.

Camera:
A WIDE use of camera shots -

- Close up at 0:05 seconds
- Mid close up at 0:18 seconds
- Long shot at 0:25 seconds
-  Over the shoulder at 1:41 seconds
- Cut away at 2:03 seconds
- Wide shot at 3:11 seconds
- Two shot at 4:10 seconds
And there are some great panning work at 4:41 seconds. (the ending)

Sound:
The song and lip singing is partially on time with each other. Some parts need work.
