Planning for Music Video: COPYRIGHT CLEARANCE.

We ask permission everyday. In college we ask to go to the toilet and we ask if we could borrow something, it is polite and safe. Otherwise if we do not ask permission it could lead to bad consequences.
Asking permission in the music industry is used quite often especially if an artist wants to do a cover on another artist's song (unless they have been requested.) They use what is called a copyright clearance (this is also used outside the music industry, like in art and law ect.)
Copyright: The exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorise others to do the same.

As the girls and I are taking a song from a popular artist it is very important that we get our copyright cleared by her Record Label.

However I could not find Mercury Record's email address so I had to contact her manager instead which I got off her Facebook page.

Here is an email of my request for a copyright clearance to use Pixie's song which i sent to her manager, Beth Narducci.

*I am still awaiting her reply*

Favourite past Student's Video

To help us understand just what we had to, when it came to making our own music video we were told to watch some student music videos from the past few years. I found this really exciting as it would give us some ideas of what kind of genre we could do and the types of things we could do to make our music video the best it could be. After watching a number of students videos I was finding it extremely difficult to pick one favourite as to me most of them were really good. In the end I decided to choose the video that inspired me and made think WOW, I wish my music video will be as creative as this video.
http://vimeo.com/17557972
The reason why i would say that this is my favourite previous student video is because I find it really interesting to watch I mean this music video makes you want to keep watching as it has great mis en scene . I mean from their costumes to their to the props they use in this music video.

Lip Synching The Finished video

The Music Industry

We all know that the music industry has changed hugely in the last 10 years. These are some of the things that have changed in the past 10 years.

Production-The process of making music and recording it to a sufficient standard so that it can be sold:
Then: Small Record Studio and would use maunal analogues like cds
Now: Music is now digital and hi tech, we have computers to download music and we alos have artifical computer.

Distribution- How this music gets to people and how do they know about it:
The: Word of mouth, or you would buy your records or cds at your local record store. You would hear from radio dj's such a John Peel or Tim Westwood who would play the latest releases on the radio.
Now: Again word of mouth or you can now download music from a number of different website such as itunes. You can also buy cds from shops such a HMV. Another way music is distributed is from social networking sites such as facebook. Or you can also get music from YouTube, and YouTubes partnerships like SB TV and YouTube channels.

Exchange- What changes hands between the people who own the music, and its audience in rewards for the chance to listen to it:
Then: Money for cds or you were able to burn cds, tapes and mix tapes.
Now: You have illegal downloading and legal downloading.

I personally get my music by either downloading it from websites such as itunes or I buy my music from Hmv.

Andrew Goodwin Part 2-

As I have explained all about Andrew Goodwin's music video theorys I thought it is only right that I try and find some good examples of his three types of relations between songs.

Illustration- To me finding a video that Illustrated the lyrics of the song was pretty easy. I decided to go with Pixie Lotts new song:- All about Tonight.
I decided to go with Pixie Lotts All About Tonights video as I think this video goes well with the lyrics. I mean the song is called All About Tonight, and at the start of the music video you see an opening shot of the night life in London, which looks amazing by the way. The song is also about going out and having a good time and I think this video really does relate to the lyrics.

Disjuncture- To me finding a video that really suited this type of relation was again really easy for me. Even though I had many examples to relate this type of realtion I decided to go for Devlin's track BrainWashed.
I decided to go with this video because if you really listen to the track you will see that the video doesnt really relate to the song. I mean the song is about being brainwashed into the religion or the mind of Devlin. As he talking about how he going to be come big in ears to come as he say "packing out stadiums," to me this video has no connection to what the song is about and doesnt even connect to the lyrics.

Amplification- To me finding a music video to represent this type of relation was really difficult. I mean even though I had a few ideas of what music videos I could use, after I listened to the song again I realised that it didnt really suit the meaning. In the end I decided to go with Ironik's - Stay with Me.

I decided to give with this music video as I think it really does what the word Amplification means. I mean this video introduces new meaning and adds layers of meaning to this song. I would also say that the lyrics of this song themselves also gives the audience new meaning.

Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin, formally known as Mr Andrew John Goodwin born in Hillingdon, Middlesex. Andrew Goodwin was the director of music and organist at Bangor Cathedral for 37 years. Andrew Goodwin had pretty strong opinons when it came to music video's in the music industry he believed that there were 5 key aspects that the audience should look out for.
These aspects are ;-
  •  Through the beats- Seeing the sound.
  • Narrative and performance-Most music videos have a story or meaning behind them.
  • The star image.
  • Relations of visuals to the song.
  • Techincal aspects of the music video.
Andrew Goodwin says there are 3 main ways in which music videos work to promote a song. Music video's promotes the song through the use of Illustration, Amplification and Disjuncture.I know right when I first heard these words I never had a clue what they meant and what they had to do with promoting a song. But I took the time to read over my notes and did my own research to find out just what these words meant.

Illustration- Music videos usually use a set of images to illustrate the meaning of the lyrics and genre. Dance is often used to express the feelings or mood in the song. -This is the common way to promote a song in the music video.

Amplification- This is similar to repeatability. Meanings and effects are manipulated and constantly shown through the video and drummed into our vision. It also occurs when the video introduces new meanings that do not contradict with the lyircs but does add layers of meaning.

Disjuncture- This is where the meaning of the song is completely ignored. It is like there will be very little connection between the lyric and video or where the video contradicts the lyrics.

Pop videos often have easily recognisable features. Another feature is the way women are presented as objects of male desire. This is particularly true of heavy metal and hip hop videos. Some artists such as Madonna and Beyonce deliberately present themselves for males to look at but what is different in their videos is that they directly look back at the viewers through the camera and they cease to be passive.

Videos also try and appeal to as wide an audience as possible without alienating the core target audience. Videos which feature older bands often show them in their younger days- but this would be the 60s and 70s so an older audience can still indentify them.

Lastly videos that are from songs written for particular movies often incorporates images from that movie in the video- just think of Celine Dion My Heart will Go On famously know from Titanic. More examples include Flo Rida's soundtrack from the Step Up movies, hits include Low from Step Up 2 and Club cant handle me ft. David Guetta from Step Up 3D.

Planning for Music Video: FINAL SONG CHOICE.

We have all decided that Pixie Lott's cover of the american band's song Use Somebody, will be our chosen song to create a music video to.

Being a group full of girls, we had no problem deciding on a song genre, we liked it slow and mellow. Just so happens that we are fans of Pixie and we all agreed Use Somebody was a great cover of hers.
Use Somebody contains very meaningful lyrics in it that we feel we could film to. Also as we will be filming our music videos for the next few weeks, we needed a song that would not get boring after a while,   filming to a song thats too upbeat and fast would eventually give us all a headache.
Also the lyrics to the song is pretty easy to learn which is an advantage as we dont have much time for filming.

Planning for Music Video: POTENTIAL SONGS FOR OUT MUSIC VIDEO.

Because we are a group of 5 girls, it is quite obvious to pick out a song that is sung by a british female artist we picked out our 3 favourite artists which are Adele, Pixie Lott and Little Boots and chose a song from each of them which we felt had potential to be the chosen song. For adele we chose two as we wanted to consider the pace, Cold Shoulder was much faster than Daydreamer therefore containing more of a beat which could be an advantage to editing. The same goes to Remedy by little boots. However we we all agreed and felt more comfortable in working with a song that was more soft and mellow - as up beat, face paced songs eventually get annoying especially as we have to work with the same song for quite a long time. This is were acoustics come in. Daydreamer and Use somebody are two beautiful songs that me and the girl did not mind working with, although a slower pace song would be much harder to edit to the beat we still have many special effects and camera work that could go perfectly with it. We're all up for that challenge!

Reflecting back on the new skills I have learnt from the practise music video I made...

I am going to start by saying I thought that making a music video would be a lot easier than making a thriller film, how wrong was I. I dont think I took into the consideration the amount of time and energy music artists put in to making and developing a music video, until I had to experience it for myself at the end of my AS year.

On our first lesson back to media after our exams, we were shown a tutorial about lip synching the media technican Mickey led this tutorial about lip synching. To help us understand more about lip synching Mickey showed us a demo of what we would achieve at the end of this lesson if we followed his instructions. To help us with the process of lip synching we used the programme Final Cut pro. As I had been using final cut pro for a while at this time, I thought I had learned everything I needed to know about this programme, but how wrong was I there was still alot more you could learn about final cut pro. The first new technique we learnt when using final cut pro was a "marker." "Marker" is when you mark a part of the song you want to use at the start of your track. To insert a "marker" all you had to do was to press the letter m, so to help us practise inserting markers in songs. We were all given a test song, the test song was a rock and roll song. Another technique we learnt about was the use of "razor blades", razor blades were used to cut out certain aspects of your music video  that you didnt want to use . I would say that this skil was quite difficult to develop, but once I took the time to learn and practise using the markers and razor blades, I found it quite easy.

After Mickey had finished his tutorial on Lip synching we were then put into groups and given a song and told we would be making our own music videos. The nerves were beginning to kick in as what if we messed up and made complete fools out of ourselves. After getting over the panic stage the real work began, we had a lot to do and only a short amount of time to do it. We had roughly about 50 minutes to film a whole music video and with no budget we had to think FAST. The song my group had was Aretha Franklins -Respect. We decided the film our music video outside as we thought it would be different and we didnt want it to seem like we were copying the orginal video. So off we went to begin filming but as we began to film we realised we had a problem, as we were only given a small mp3 player we realised that Ethel-who was singing the song in the video wouldnt be able to hear the song, which would make it difficult to film the music video. In the end we tried our best and went a head and filmed with Ethel singing the song.

When it came to the editing process of our music video the one thing we had trouble with was making sure that the miming was in time with the actual song, this process was defientaletly the hardest out of the whole music video. Several times we thought yes we have finally got it right but once we would play it back we would realise that we still hadnt managed it yet. After working closely and careful we managed to get the miming in time with the actual song. Result. All in all I would say for a first attempt at making a music video I think I did a pretty good job, even though we did face a few problems we managed to sort them out and still make a good first attempt music video.

Review Of Student Video

"Begging"  http://vimeo.com/2277795
Representation: defiantly very strong in this video and uses the theory of Laura Mulvey, using the male as the dominant sex and ladies symbolising sexuality. In specific when the females are dancing around the males while they are sitting down represents this.
Narrative Structure: Is defiantly amplification as the video doesn't really have a great deal of similarity with the lyrics, but it does in some parts for example the lyric “begging”  relates to the males trying to get their girlfriends back.
The video also follows a certain structure explained by carol vernallis, as the video always goes to a backtrack of the males performing to the camera and edits sync with the rhythm of the music.

The edits were put together wonderfully and the jump cuts were in perfect timing with the music.

The camera work was good as well with:
  • Mid shots
  • Long shots
  • Over shoulder shot
  • Handheld
  • Point of view shot
  • High angled shot
One thing that i did notice is that some of the shots were very still and you could tell that no one was holding the camera. But the shots that were moving with the music were very good.

Student Video review

Student Work

The student video I have decided to review is the video from the song 'Fix You' by Coldplay.
In this music video I liked that that there is a narrative and performance aspect of the video instead of just one of them, and I think this video is an amplification video too. I also like the use of editing in this music video (I like the way things are black and white for them when they get bad news, and when things get better colour comes in).

Location played a big part  in the second half of this music video, and if it was anywhere else it would not have been as affect. At the location there were Christmas lights put up (I think) which made the mood of the music video seem lighter hearted because it is bright and colourful. I also like the use of the high angle/fast forward shot on the bridge as it connotes the idea of moving forward in life. Near the end of music video slow motion edits is used which gives a more romantic feel, almost like everything slowed down for them.

Carol Vernallis theory

Carol Vernallis looked at the camera work and the editing of the music video while studying her theory. She looked at how the editing was broken down in a special way to fit the music and to match what was going on in the video. She also looked at the base track and how it is the man visuals that the editors always cut back to. She also noted how editing is used to fit the music and the camera shots.

The music video 'Dip it Low' by Christina Milian, above has fast editing and cuts in time with the beat of the music, and the camera wor varies depending on what is going on in the video.

Laura Mulvey's theory

Laura Mulvey's theory suggest that in this world, women are portrayed in a way that men would want them to be portrayed.

In the music video above the women are portrayed as sex crazed people or a 'nympho' and this is how men would like women to be. They are dressed in skimpy clothe and/or lingerie while in the car or in public, again showing how they would like to view women (or their fantasises)

Andrew Goodwin's theory

Amplification
This music video relates to Andrew Goodwin's theory by being an amplification video as it adds new layers of meaning to the original lyrics of the song. The lyrics 'If we do the Unthinkable, would it make us look crazy' could mean anything as the word 'Unthinkable' has an ambiguous meaning, but the music video shows that the 'Unthinkable' is having an inter-racial relationship.

Disjunction

This music video relates to Andrew Goodwin's theory by being a  disjunction because the music video has nothing to do with the song lyrics. The song is about a woman not being interested in a 'useless man' but the video has nothing that would even connote that idea. R.I.P Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes.

Illustration

This music video relates to Andrew Goodwin's theory as it is an illustration video as follows some of the lyrics used in the music video. '...throw me hand in my pants', as he says this he (and his monkey dancers) do the actions.

Analysis of Music Video

This music video is called  'Cater 2 U' by the now disbanded girl group Destiny's Child.

This music video uses good use of mid shots to show the sex appeal of the women, there is also a good use of wide shots to establish the location.  The music video has a lot of jump cuts and the cuts are very fast and precise.  The camera is mostly moving in the shots, but i do not think it is hand held, as it seems too perfect (maybe a camera dolly is used for tracking and panning). In a lot of the shots the camera is held towards the ground pointing up at the women, making them appear more powerful, which is also a meaning of the song. There is also close ups of certain parts of the body (02:31 close up of the man's eyes).

The edits are fast, and in some parts of the music video it blacks out, before cutting back to the base track - making it feel like the viewer is blinking and when they open they're eyes they are in a new place again. There is also a part in the music video (02:48) where a fast forward effect is used and the set, changes from day to night in the process. I think this is a good effect because it is not something used in most music videos, and because it is a nice visual.

Music Video - Function

The function of the music video is to advertise and promote the the artist and their music, and make the artist more known. That way more people would want to know more about the artist and go to see them live in concert, so the artist would earn more money.

Carol Yernallis: Video Example

One of the music videos that I choose was sugababes “shape of my heart”

  • This video is defiantly a disjunction video as the video doesn't really link with the song, and show a clear storyline
  • Continuous different edits but in the same settings
  • Camera moving in the same time with the music
  • Certain edits sync with the beat and tempo
  • Semi - slow motion on verses and chorus, One example would be the part where they are running through the door
  • Fast random edits
  • Obvious back tracking to artist making eye contact, in the ball and looking up from the water
  • Very good special effects to catch audiences attention

Laura Mulvey: Video Examples

50 cent - Ayo technology
This video here, is defiantly a example of dominant males fantasying over females and portraying them in the sexual way they want.

Akon - Wanna Love You
This videos also shows the dominant males (being the artists) and the sexual females as extras to fantasise over

Carol Yernallis Theory

Carol Yernallis main theory of describing the editing structure and camera is very clearly showing that there is a substantial amount of linking between the music video and music without having to be a typical illustration or amplification narrative. And can still link through a disjunction video from the rhythm and tempo of the song to keep everything in sync and understandable in a way that it intrigues the audience.

Andrew Goodwin Theory

This was firstly made in 1993 where pop videos where becoming very popular and the old Todorov narrative analysis didnt really apply to modern day music videos as much anymore.

Its basically to Categorise  music videos into different ways in which the artist wants to represent their self as well as their music. It also uses a lot of links between repetition between the song and video to appeal to the audience and stick into their heads. These three are:

  • Illustration
  • Amplification
  • Disjunction

Laura Mulvey’s Quote

(Shortened)
In a world of stereotypical sexism male and female representation is divided into Domination of males and sexualities of females. Male fantasies are projected into females who dress to fit those fantasies.

Andrew Goodwin: Example Videos

Disjunction:
Black eyed peas - Where Is The Love
Lyrics seem to be quite  controversial, with a lot of meaning. Not showing clear resemblances from the lyrics of the song to video, But examples would be the question marks on the people and settings in the video which obviously contradicts the question where is the love?

Illustration:
Katy Perry - Friday Night
Lyrics of the song clearly relate and link to the video, explaining her story of last Friday night.
Example of her singing "Pictures of last night ended up online" shows a clear link of her looking through the pictures of last Friday night on Facebook in the video.

Amplification:
Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You
The video doesn’t relate to the lyrics at all really, As the song would relate to a club or dance performance scene, with friends or loved ones much more than a boy making a plane and flying it. But as you can see the video still tells a story.

Analysis Example Music Video

This example is a video from a group called Rizzle Kicks called 'Prophet'
  1.  It cleary shows good use techniques of camera angles and movement.
  2. Shows good use of shot types, mid shots, medium close ups, wide shots and long shot
  3. Use of camera movement - Everything is handheld for example the panning and tracking. Also with a lot of High angle shots and a establishing shot at the beginning to show where they are.
  4. Jump Cuts
  5. Slow motion
  6. Special Effects
  7. Fast edits
  8. Discontinuous editing
  9. Backtracking

Function Of A Music Video?

The function of a music is to promote the artist and song in way to bring the audience and fans closer, and show that they can communicate in multi media ways. Also sometimes to create controversy to big up a artist for example Madonna ‘like a prayer’ and Lady gaga ‘Judas’

Summer Lesson

In the summer lesson  I learnt how to edit using markers and base tracks on final cut pro,

  • Here I had to open a few clips of a unedited music video where I had to sync the  music sound with it at the right time to look like he’s singing in time along with it. It was a challenge at first but I was able to get used too it very quickly and complete it well.

  • In my group I also had to make a practice pop music video
  • Learnt how to use Photoshop element, to edit images and make them look presentable.
  • Produce a digipak

AS Technical Skills

During my time in AS I developed a lot of skills including how to edit videos, open certain files and add sounds to enhance film quality.

Programs used:
Final Cut - Where I edited the videos clips
Pineapple - Where I emerged the videos to upload
Live type - Editing fonts and to create credits for our film. This also included style, timing and attribution.
Soundtrack pro - Importing videos from final cut and adding sounds genres to it to add more quality and intensity.

Summer Lessons- First Digipak

So before we broke up for our summer holidays, we were given a taster of what our A2 media year would be like. One of the things we did during these lessons was make a digipak to the song we recorded as a group. When it came to designing my digipak, Im gonna be honest and say that i struggled with this task as I had never really used photoshop properly. The first thing I decided to do was to keep my digipak simple at this time, as I thought when it came to designing my real digipak that is when i could really show what I had learnt about using adobe photoshop.

When it came to designing the digipak cover itself, I thought that I should use pretty basic colours and pictures, as I thought the coulours and pictures would capture the real meaning of the song itself. I also chose these images and colours for my digipak as I thought they would reallly symbolize the meaning of respect. And it also showed that the little girl was looking upto her big brother, which showed that she repected her big brother. I chose to put the image in the middle of the cd cover as I thought it would be a good place to situate the image as it is an obivous place and people always look in the middle of a cd cover.

I would say that im quite happy with my digipak, as even though I tried my best with my digipak and I know I could have tried a lot harder with my digipak. But as I became frustrated a number of times due to me not being able to use adobe photoshop, I decided to give up easily. When it comes to making my real digipak for my music video, I am going to take the time to learn how to use adobe photoshop properly and then put all my energy in to making the best digipak I could possible make.

    This is the finished image of my digi pak;
